The
Red Lake is situated 1 km northwest from Imotski. It was named
“red” due to its red-coloured rocks on the cliffs. The lake
was formed in the underground caves whose ceilings collapsed
during an earthquake. There are a lot of legends about its
creation.
The
colour of the lake is dark blue. Its dimensions on the water
surface are 150 m * 180 m. The highest water level measured so
far is 282 m, but that is not the lowest point of the lake. From
the water surface to the edge of the lake precipice there is
about 250 m, what makes the Red Lake one of the deepest karst
lakes in the world.
The Red Lake has never
run dry. Documented water level fluctuations are 22 m, which is
twice as big as water level fluctuations of the other lakes,
with the exception of the Blue Lake. Along the edge of the
precipice there are a lot of crevices, especially along the
steeper northern side. They show us that the big blocks of rock
are about to crack and fall into the precipice, which means that
the precipice is in the middle of the process of growth.
The creation of the karst lakes and swallow holes,
especially the ones in the area of Imotski, was influenced by
inner vertical corrosion, deep crevices, earthquake line which
goes right through Imotski and geological structure of the area.
Imo
adventure
offers you a walk along the edge of the lake precipice with an
abundance of unforgettable views and beautiful landscapes
(don’t forget to bring the camera!). After that you will be
descending into the precipice of the lake on the eastern side.
All our guests will be firmly secured with a rope and will be
wearing protective helmets and rock - climbing safety belts, so
the descent would be perfectly safe even for those who have
never had any rock - climbing experience.
The bravest
will be able to try a real abseil: 100 m down into the precipice.
The descent itself takes about 15 minutes. It’s an experience
you don’t want to miss!

The price of this trip is 190 kn (250 kn with the abseil). It
includes a professional guide, rock – climbing equipment (ropes,
helmet, safety belt, safety hooks…) and beverages with
optional lunch, serving the specialities of Imotski.
