Biokovo
is a giant mountain range near the sea. It’s 28 km long, 11 km
wide and its highest peak is at 1762 m (St Jure). This mountain
shows many contrasts of nature on a rather small area with its abundance
of flora, including some endemic species, and rich
fauna. The climb starts in Zagvozd, a village situated 13 km
southwest from Imotski. There are a few possible paths, but the
most interesting one is the path towards the highest peak of
Biokovo.
Imo
adventure
offers you a climb to the highest peak, St Jure (1762 m),
starting from the village Milići, nea r
Zagvozd. The village is situated at 440 m above the sea level, 3
km east from Zagvozd. After a 20-minute climb you will be
entering a beech wood. The climb continues up to the Očijeski
Wells (three stone wells) at 1100 m above the sea. It takes
about two hours to get to the wells. After the wells, you will
continue climbing on a steep bare ground, enter shortly into the
woods and come out at Razvala (a slope right underneath the top
at about 1400 m above the sea). The climb will continue up on
the bare rocky ground of Biokovo until you reach the very top
where you will find a St Jure church.
From the top you will have a beautiful view of the Imotsko Polje
Valley and mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina on one side, and
of the sea and our islands on the other. The climb takes about 4
hours. After a short break, you will go back the same way. The
whole trip (the climb and return) takes about 7 hours. It’s a
rather demanding trip; it requires appropriate physical
readiness.
The price of
the trip is 150 kn / person, a guide included.
